Australian left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty will replace the injured Nathan Hauritz in the squad for the next two one-day internationals against England,Cricket Australia said on Saturday.
The selectors also put Peter Siddle on standby after Mitchell Johnson was ruled out of Sunday’s third one-dayer in Sydney, having failed to fully recover from a throat infection.
His pace colleague Shaun Tait is also doubtful because of an upper thigh injury sustained in Friday’s match in Hobart.
With the unavailability of Mitchell Johnson and some doubt over the fitness of Shaun Tait, the NSP has added Peter Siddle as a standby player for tomorrow’s match at the SCG,National Selection Panel (NSP) chief Andrew Hilditch said in a statement.
Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said Tait underwent scans which cleared him of any major damage.
He will be assessed over the next 12 hours to determine his management and availability for tomorrow’s match and the remainder of this series.
Kountouris was optimistic about Johnson’s chance of playing in the fourth one-dayer in Adelaide on Jan 26 but virtually ruled out Hauritz’s participation in the series because of a dislocated shoulder, which also jeopardises the off-spinner’s World Cup prospects.
It is likely he will be unavailable for the remainder of the series and his availability for the World Cup will be determined in the coming weeks.
Dumped from the Ashes squad,Hauritz capped his nightmarish summer by dislocating his shoulder fielding in the second one-day international on Friday, prompting selectors to draft in 22-year-old Tasmanian Doherty.
The squad will be reviewed at the conclusion of the fourth game when the NSP has further information regarding the injury status of various players,Hilditch said.
Beaten comprehensibly in the Ashes,Australia have fared better in the seven-match ODI series having won the first two matches so far.
