The Municipal Corporation (MC) Wednesday launched a strict enforcement drive against major private commercial and industrial units with pending property tax dues. Acting under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh Sandhu and the supervision of nodal officer Dr Sanjeev Kamboj, a special MC team reached the premises of a well-known immigration company, WWICS, to seal the property.

The arrival of MC vehicles triggered panic at the company’s office. The team first directed employees to vacate the premises so that sealing proceedings could begin. Despite repeated requests by the management to halt the action, the MC officials made it clear that no relief would be granted without payment of the outstanding tax.

Eventually, the company deposited nearly Rs 4 lakh towards pending property tax with the Municipal Corporation, following which the sealing action was suspended.

Afterwards, the MC team carried out similar action at Chawla Publication in Phase 8B and several other properties across the city. As the sealing drive intensified, many property owners immediately doing RTGS and cleared their dues. Officials said the impact of the strict measures was clearly visible, with a significant rise in revenue collection.

Target of Rs 55 crore by March 31

MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh said that a target of Rs 55 crore has been set for property tax collection by March 31 in the current financial year, and the corporation expects to exceed the target due to the ongoing enforcement drive.

He added that the special drive launched against old defaulters had been completed successfully. As per the pre-announced programme, action was taken on January 7 against commercial and industrial units, resulting in the recovery of around Rs 22 lakh in property tax.

“Such strict action against defaulters will continue in the coming days,” officials said.

Soft approach towards govt departments

Even as the MC cracks down on private commercial and industrial establishments, allegations of leniency towards government departments have surfaced. Several major government bodies, including GMADA, reportedly owe property tax running into crores of rupees, but no concrete action has been taken against them so far.

The corporation’s strictness remaining largely confined to private entities has raised questions about unequal enforcement. Residents have demanded that the MC adopt a uniform approach in tax recovery and take similar action against government departments with outstanding dues.
