K. J. Choi was the last man standing at the Players Championship, winning on the first hole of sudden death with a short par putt after David Toms who had made a 17-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole to tie missed a putt that was two inches shorter than Chois. It was a fitting end to a grueling Sunday at T.P.C. Sawgrass that featured nearly 12 hours of golf and a whole day of carnage.
Dream come true
That summed it up nicely. Choi and Toms shot the same final-round score,a two-under-par 70,for a 13-under total of 275. That put the two ahead of Paul Goydos 69,the runner-up here three years ago,and three strokes ahead of Luke Donald and Nick Watney.
Graeme McDowell, who completed the third round with a 69 for a one-stroke lead over Choi and Toms, struggled to a final-round 79 and finished tied for 33rd.
Although the miss on the first playoff hole was difficult for Toms to take,he drew solace from his ability to hang in,playing at or near the lead for 31 holes while trying to win his first tournament in five years.
With the lead or around the lead the whole time,I mean, its tough when you havent been there in a while and when you havent played this golf course well, said Toms, who has missed the cut 10 times in 19 Players Championship appearances. So I just, you know,I just kept plugging along, plugging along and made a couple mistakes towards the end,but making that putt on 18 when I had to,you know, that just shows that I can still do it when I need to.
