It was one offer any Indian footballer would have gladly accepted without a thought, but not Bhaichung Bhutia. The Indian captain has turned down an offer from Portuguese legend Luis Figo to take part in an exhibition match in Geneva.

After a long and gruelling season I need a break. I want to spend time with my family before the next season begins,so I didnt accede to his Figos request, Bhutia told The Indian Express. The Luis Figo Foundation seeks to provide underprivileged children with opportunities to fully realise their potential through sports. It also organises exhibition matches with big stars for raising funds, and one such match was scheduled for the second week of June with Bhutia invited as an Asian superstar. Zinedine Zidane,Ronaldinho and Paolo Maldini are expected to be part of the event.

However,Bhutia said he would rather visit his hometown Tinkitam,in Sikkim, and thank his fans for voting to help him win a dance reality show. I have some personal work to do. Most importantly,I have to recharge my batteries before the Indian teams camp starts on June 22. The next two years will be very important for Indian football. We have qualified for the Asian Cup and will have to ensure that we prepare well for such a big event, he said, explaining his decision. Bhutia had earlier participated in world exhibition matches, including the Goal 4 Africa charity match in Munich last year when he scored twice.

Meanwhile,Mohun Bagan are yet to take a decision on Bhutia despite the latter having replied to their show-cause letter and seeking release, with club secretary Anjan Mitra in Dubai to discuss the issue with club president Swapan Sadhan Bose.
