It’s time for slogans–and you can be sure there will be as many catchy ones as cheesy ones in the run-up to what could be an early general election. It’s the Congress that has started first off the block. Rahul Gandhi’s coming of age in the party, which coincided with the Indian cricket team winning the first Twenty20 Cricket World Cup, has got the quintessential organisation man Oscar Fernandes playing the wordsmith. Referring to an article in Time magazine on India’s 60th year of independence and its youthful population, Fernandes said Mera Bharat Jawan was the apt slogan for the country today. So while father Rajiv Gandhi made much out of his Mera Bharat Mahan, it could be that Rahul—recently put in charge of the Youth Congress and the NSUI—will forge ahead with his new slogan.
