New Delhi, Aug 3: National champion Poulomi Ghatak and NR Indu today failed to qualify for the women’s singles main draw, finishing second in their respective qualfying groups at the World Table Tennis Championship in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The two lost their first matches and won their second tie to miss out on the 30 qualfying berths into the tournament proper, according to information received from AFP here.
In Group 24, Poulomi lost her first match to Alena Vachovcova of the Czech Republic 13-21 15-21 last night but bounced back strongly to beat Spain’s Jessica Hernandez 21-13 21-13 in her second match.
The Indian got a walkover from Afef Naouar of Tunisia, who failed to turn up for the event, in her third game to finish behind Vachovcova in the four-player group. Vachovcova topped the group with an all-win record.
Indu got a walkover from Antra Ilkena of Latvia in the first game in Group 10 but lost to Agathe Costes of France 10-21 20-21 in the second game to finish second. Costes,who beat Ilkena 21-6 21-10, topped the group.
In men’s singles qualifying tournament, India’s Bhushan Thakur started his campaign on a positive note, beating Shane Overmeyer of South Africa 21-18 21-17 in Group 15.
National champion Chetan Baboor is the lone Indian to get a direct entry into the main draw.
Baboor, placed in the second quarter of the draw, will take on a qualifier in the first round. The top Indian paddler will take on 27th seeded Qianli Qian of Austria in second round.
