NANDESARI, July 15: Gujarat Governor Anshuman Singh on Wednesday stated no check on pollution was possible unless control was exercised on the growing population.
In his inaugural address at the launch of the Common Solid Waste Disposal Facility CSWDF being set up by the Nandesari Environment Control Ltd NECL at the GIDC Industrial Estate here, Singh observed, 8220;Pollution is not limited to the industrial sector alone and cannot be wiped out merely by managing industrial waste. The call of the day is population control and unless that is achieved we cannot arrest environment pollution.8221;
While commending the contribution of the industries towards development in the State, Singh said that the industrial sector had yet to make a sustained effort to regulate its waste production.
8220;The primary responsibility to tackle pollution rests with the industries, which should avoid using or producing materials that can be hazardous to its workers and inhabitants of surrounding areas. However, I believe, a majority of them are not taking the necessary precautions. Though 200 industries have participated in the NECL project, there are many more which should extend support to the same,8221; he said.
Singh also appealed to the public to work towards pollution control on an individual level and help foster environment-friendly industrial growth.
Addressing the gathering, Gujarat Pollution Control Board Chairman GPCB M S Swaminathan said the Board was planning to introduce shortly a new computerised monitoring facility with assistance of the World Bank to keep track of solid waste management at all industries. Managing Director and President of NECL Mohan Nair appealed to the State government to allot more land to the industrial sector free-of-cost to allow better waste management.
