Arrest 28 people, including staff and school-going boys and girls
The police registered a case against two illegally-run Hookah Bars in Umra on Tuesday evening. In the first-of-its-kind case in Surat, the police arrested 28 people, including school-going boys and girls. All have been booked under the Prohibition Act.
Acting on a tip-off, the Umra police conducted raids at two Hookah bars, Moon Light at L B Shopping Complex and Kashan in the City Light area, in the evening. During the raid, the police officials were shocked to see school-going boys enjoying Hookah parties at both bars. The raids led to the arrest of 28 people, including the staff and four minor girls, who were also present at the bars.
Later, the police also raided the recently opened Hookah Bar in the Ghod Dod Road area, but found it empty. Officials suspect that the bar owner might have received information about the raids at the other two bars and alerted his staff and customers.
Umra Inspector R S Patel said: 8220;We discovered that several Hookah bars have been functioning illegally in the Umra area. These bars attract a huge number of school and college going students. After receiving information, we conducted raids at the two bars. The bar owners were not able to produce any license and thus strict action will be taken against them.8221;
