(Express Photo by Pavan Khengre) The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar jointly unveiled their manifesto for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) election Saturday, promising free public transport for city residents, besides better roads, water supply and waste management.
Titled ‘Ashtasutri Pragati’ and ‘Ashtavadhani Netritva’, the manifesto that focuses on the city’s development was released by Ajit Pawar and NCP(SP) working president Supriya Sule.
“The focus of the NCP-NCP(SP) alliance, when elected to power, will be to ensure sufficient water supply to citizens across the city, pothole-free roads and completion of missing links to provide for faster and safe movement of traffic, resolving cleanliness issues by completely processing waste, strengthening the health care system and making it affordable, and tackling increasing air and water pollution,” Ajit said.
He said the manifesto was prepared through ground-level surveys, interactions with the public at the ward level, and by observing the everyday concerns and expectations of citizens in Pune.

Traffic issues in the city can be resolved by strengthening the public transport system and providing free travel to discourage the use of private vehicles, Ajit said.
“Free travel in Metro and buses will be provided by the PMC, which will bear the operational cost. The state (Mahayuti) government was unable to recover the dues linked to electricity used for agriculture, so they made it free. So, this is possible if the civic body takes up the financial burden of operating the public transport system, which it has been doing partially,” the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister added.
The NCP-NCP(SP) also promised property tax relief for small homes, free electronic tablets for students, and interest-free self-employment loans for citizens. The alliance will also address flood control, drainage planning, and protection of nullahs, besides increasing green cover, providing ecological restoration, and ensuring climate-resilient infrastructure, said Pawar.
“A large population of the city lives in slums, so their upliftment is necessary. The NCP-NCP(SP) will take up rehabilitation, protection for legal properties, livelihood security, and resident-driven redevelopment of old buildings,” he said.
Basic education needs to be strengthened for the poor in civic schools, for which 150 modern schools will be started under the CBSE or ICSE boards, with trained teachers, science and computer labs, sports facilities, and which provides Marathi foundation along with English medium with no extra fees, Ajit added.
Rooted in the values of Shiv–Shahu–Phule–Ambedkar, the manifesto underlines the NCP’s focus on social justice, planned development and administrative discipline, aiming to restore efficiency, accountability and quality of life in Pune through strong and responsive municipal governance.
The PMC election is scheduled to be held on January 15 and the results will be declared on January 16.
