NEW DELHI, April 30: The Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has directed the Planning Commission PC to evolve appropriate action plans in consultations with the various ministries and the finance ministry in order to achieve the goals listed in his address to the nation after assumption of office.
In a letter to the Planning Commission deputy chairperson, Jaswant Singh, the Prime Minister has said that for achieving these goals concerted efforts of the Union government, cutting across compartmentalised departmental approach and full involvement and participation of the state governments would be required.
The goals, it may be recalled, include doubling food production and making India hunger free in 10 years; expansion and improvement of social infrastructure with provision of drinking water to every settlement within five years; rapid expansion and improvement of physical infrastructure, national water policy and making India a global information technology power. The Prime Minister said in hisletter, dated April 16, that taking into account the physical, financial and human resources available, the ongoing developmental projects and schemes and the deployment of resources, concrete action plans would have to be evolved to attain these goals.
More than one ministry would be involved in the finalisation of these plans and their implementation and the Ministry of Finance would necessarily have to be consulted, the Prime Minister has said asking the Planning Commission to take the responsibility of drawing up concrete action plans after consultations and desired that the exercise be completed within the next few weeks. The Prime Minister has also sent a copy of the letter to the all members of the Council of Ministers for information and follow-up action.
