8226; Your editorial 8216;Destroying AMU8217; IE, May 21 has rightly termed the HRD ministry8217;s move for 50 per cent reservation for Muslim students in various PG and professional courses in Aligarh Muslim University as an educationally retrograde and politically fraught step. It is heartening that 65 AMU faculty members have in a public appeal termed the move as a violation of the established traditions of AMU. It is such resistance and rejection from the Muslim community itself that can prove to be a safeguard for the interests of the community against politicians pursuing petty vote-bank politics.

8226; I am a native of Aligarh and I have a degree in engineering from AMU. I am shocked to read that AMU has lost its character by reserving 50 per cent seats to Muslims. In fact now there will be a very large percentage of Muslims at AMU, qualified or not, most probably not. This trend may backfire in that other institutions may not admit even highly qualified Muslim students. Also, the hiring authorities may not hire any AMU graduates.
