GANDHINAGAR, March 11: Firebrand BJP MLA Mahendra Mashru today clobbered the Government for initiating a move to provide pension to all the MLAs, dubbing it as quot;immoral and anti-poorquot;.

Moving a non-official Bill, The Gujarat Legislative Assembly Members8217; Pension Repeal Bill, 1998, in the State Assembly today, Mashru came down heavily on his own party government for the move and demanded that the government repeal the Gujarat Legislative Assembly Members8217; Pension Act enacted in 1989.

Later, when Parliamentary Minister Suresh Mehta requested Mashru to withdraw his non-official Bill, saying the latter should not take an extreme view when the BJP was framing rules for pension which would help the needy members in their old age. Mehta felt that Mashru should not press for repealing the pension Bill passed in 1984 and quot;we all should wait till the High Court gives its verdict on a public interest litigation filed against the Billquot;.

When Mashru refused, Mehta moved a resolution to reject the Bill, which the Speaker put to vote and the Bill was rejected by voice vote. The BJP member from Junagadh said, quot;the government move to provide pension to all the MLAs will entail an additional burden of Rs 40 lakh on the people, 60 per cent of whom are living below the poverty linequot;.
