
Polling in the four Assembly constituencies of Faizabad district, including Ayodhya, took place minus any incident today. After a slow start in the morning, voting gathered pace over the day and a 48 per cent turnout was recorded by evening.
In Ayodhya, the turnout was high early in the morning but later the scorching sun kept most voters indoors. Mahant Gyan Das, the chief priest of Hanuman Garhi, was the first to cast his vote at the Hanuman Garhi polling booth. Along with the Mahant, a number of other religious leaders also lined up to vote early but had to return disappointed after mistakes were detected in their ID cards or their names were found missing from the voters8217; list.
After casting his vote at Ayodhya8217;s junior high school, BJP National General Secretary and MP Vinay Katiyar said President8217;s rule would soon to be implemented in the state in case of a hung Assembly. He said there was a UPA conspiracy to snatch the voting rights of Uttar Pradesh legislators in the coming Presidential elections.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Katiyar said he hoped the BJP would come back to power in Uttar Pradesh on its own steam.
In Milkipur Assembly constituency, which had been declared most sensitive, polling went off peacefully. Anad Sen, former MLA and son of sitting BSP MP Mitrasen Yadav, is contesting from the seat on a BSP ticket.
Sen said, 8220;The BSP8217;s voters, including Dalits, backwards and minorities have voted en bloc in my favor and this time we are going to get back our traditional seat which we lost in the last byelection.8221;
In Ayodhya, BJP candidate and sitting MLA Lallu Singh Chauhan was confident that he would retain the seat. 8220;For the last 16 years Ayodhya has been an impregnable fortress. No one has the power to demolish it,8221; he said.
