8226; It is shocking that, besides sundry members of Parliament, two prominent former prime ministers have also defaulted on payment of electricity and telephone dues.
I live in a housing cooperative society, the bye-laws of which debar members from voting for and contesting any management position of the society if they owe money to the society. Should we not apply the same rules to the members of the legislative houses? The Election Commission should debar all defaulters.

Border disorders
8226; This refers to Jasjit Singh8217;s article 8216;No defence, this8217;, IE, March 5. India is a vast country, it is not only rich and diverse in its cultural heritage but is also blessed with natural resources. We need to protect our long borders to preserve our unity in diversity. But sadly, we do not seem to have learnt anything from past mistakes.

8226; If one assumes that the individuals listed by Sagarika Ghose indeed all qualify as intellectuals, then the BJP is wise to examine intellectuals carefully before associating with them 8216;The enigma of arrival8217;, IE, March 4. She also seems to forget that even 8216;8216;intellectuals8217;8217; like to be associated with power. The Congress Party held power for nearly two generations without coalition partners. The BJP has led a coalition for about six years. Already, intellectuals are gathering to test how they can go with the BJP. Ghose should not rejoice too soon!

8226; Sagarika Ghose has done well to explain why the BJP fails to inspire independent thinkers and intellectuals. Her analysis provides clear insights into the BJP8217;s tendency to refer to anyone not agreeing with its line of thought as 8216;8216;pseudo8217;8217;, 8216;8216;leftist8217;8217; or even un-patriotic. No wonder the BJP fails to attract institution-builders.

Whose match?
8226; Atal Bihari Vajpayee8217;s statement that the cricket series against Pakistan should please India8217;s Muslims reveals his motives. Although he is prime minister of the whole of India, he is bent only on appeasing the Muslim minority by giving it the pleasure of watching its sons slaughter its nephews on the battle-field.
He cares nothing for people of the majority, who are as much Indian as are the Muslims, and who might have wanted to watch what used to be a game.

Degree of separation
8226; Arun ShourieHOURIE was stopped by the Election Commission from attending the convocation function of a university on the grounds that it was an official function and political leaders could not address it now that the code of conduct is being enforced. This is one more example of the EC stretching its code of conduct too far.
The university convocation function had nothing to do with politics and elections. Going by the EC8217;s logic, all seminars and conferences having national and international participation should be put on hold.
