KOLHAPUR, Jan 5: The Central Government8217;s decision to import 10 lakh tonnes of sugar from Pakistan was unnecessary as the country had a surplus of 100 tonnes, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sharad Pawar said today.
8220;Pakistan, which disturbs the peace and tranquility of the Kashmiri people by sending trained terrorists equipped with arms and ammunition into the Valley, was shown a soft corner8221;, the senior Congress leader said, while addressing a farmers8217; rally at Khupire in Karveer taluka of the district.
Pawar also criticised the recent attacks on the Christian community in Gujarat, where 8220;law and order had collapsed8221;.
In Maharashtra too, the situation was not encouraging, Pawar said, adding that 8220;rampant corruption and large scale extortion incidents have resulted in a collapse of the law and order situation in the State8221;.
There was large-scale corruption in the Krishna Khore Vikas Mahamandal, he alleged.
Pawar lauded the role played by party president Sonia Gandhi, whose 8220;charismatic leadership8221;, he said, had ensured a thumping victory for the Congress in the November Assembly elections in four states.
