Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel was tonight fined 60 per cent of his match fees by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle for excessive appealing during the second day’s play of the second Test against Pakistan. Madugalle had summoned the young Indian stumper for a hearing after the two umpires Steve Bucknor and Simon Taufel had reported Patel to the referee after the day’s play which witnessed quite a few close decisions being awarded in batsmen’s favour.

Indian captain Rahul Dravid and team manager Ratnakar Shetty were also present during the hearing held tonight.

The 19-year-old Patel, playing in his 15th Test, was the second player to face disciplinary action during the series after Pakistan wicketkeeper Moin Khan was fined 80 per cent of his match fees during the first Test in Multan. During the second day’s play, Bucknor turned down two loud shouts for leg before wicket, one against Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul Haq, when on 65 and the other against Yousuf Youhana on 35, off the bowling of Irfan Pathan. Youhana also survived an appeal for caught behind on 38 off leg-spinner Anil Kumble, the umpire being Taufel. (pti)
