While Mumbai established control in their game against Gujarat at the Wankhede Stadium today, the visitors suffered a body blow in the morning when wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel dislocated his left thumb while collecting a throw.

8216;8216;The injury is likely to take a week to recover. But if need be, he will bat in the second innings,8217;8217; observed coach Vijay Patel.

For his part, the 19-year-old out-of-favour with the national team wicketkeeper mumbled: 8216;8216;What can I say. It is part of the game.8217;8217;

The bright spot for Gujarat, however, was debutant Ashraf Makda, who impressed with his discipline. The 23-year-old left-arm pacer had reasonable success when he claimed opener Vinayak Mane 28. Makda finished with figures of 1 for 51 from his 23 overs.

Golwalkar, lodhgar spin an encouraging tale

Keeping in tune with the Day One trend of bowlers having a ball, MP8217;s Yogesh Golwalkar scalped eight against former champions Railways at Indore. Meanwhile, Bengal fought themselves in through left-arm spinner Murtaza Lodhgar 4/34 to bring Andhra to their knees. Now, with Anil Kumble getting better and better with age, 24-year-old leggie Golwalkar might not have high hopes for the moment, but more hauls like today8217;s might catch the selectors8217; attention. Ditto for Murali Kartik. Lodhgar8217;s left-arm spin is doing the trick for Bengal and the 27-year-old saved his team again today.

Do your duty, forget the rest

Despite hardly a vacancy in Team India, discard Wasim Jaffer 86 keeps the Test openers on their toes with some big knocks every now and then. He can only hope that the selectors are making a note of it, in case a vacancy comes up in the near future.
