AHMEDABAD, June 14: A high-level committee for settlement of wage structure of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation GSRTC is meeting here on Tuesday to work out implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations.

The committee will negotiate with leaders of Gujarat Rajya ST Karmachari Mahamadal, the representative union, under the provisions of Industrial Disputes Act. The implementation of the new wage structure is due since August 1997.

Mahamandal general secretary Dayhabhai Pilwaikar said the GSRTC had a workforce of 60,000. He said the corporation was facing a financial crunch, which called for more dedicated service from the employees.

Mahamandal sources said though there was no possibility of a strike at present as the management had invited the union for talks, but should the need arise, the union would not hesitate to call a strike. This is the first meeting after July 1997 when the Mahamandal had put forth its demands for wage settlement before the Corporation.

Those participating in the talks include Mahamandal president Satubh Gohi, Pilwaikar, senior government officials and the managing director.
