After two taskforces set by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to discuss threadbare the Conditional Access System CAS, a decision was taken today to set up a committee to oversee its implementation.
The Implementation Committee for CAS will have the three heads of Sony, Zee and Star, Aaj Tak CEO G. Krishnan and CNBC/TV-188217;s Raghav Bahl and the heads of multi-service operators and cable operators once an order is issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
8216;8216;The committee will be headed by Additional Secretary Vijay Singh and will facilitate implementation of CAS when it rolls out in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi,8217;8217; I038;B Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.
Prasad said the committee will ensure a meaningful and structured implementation of CAS. 8216;8216;The committee will also interact with consumers from time to time,8217;8217; he said.
The committee has its task cut out. To begin with, the Rs 72 package announced by the Government has been junked by stakeholders leaving consumers wondering about their monthly cable bills.
In the absence of any written agreement by stakeholders, the Government can do little to see the implementation of the festive offer.
Secondly, cable operators are not sure about the demand of set top boxes.
