KARACHI, Jan 2: A decision on naming Pakistan’s captain for their forthcoming tour of India may be put off until an inquiry into corruption in Pakistani cricket delivers its verdict.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is due to select captain for the tour starting on January 23 when it meets tomorrow.

“It will be a tough decision, it might be a decision which will be postponed,” PCB chief executive Majid Khan said.

He said there was a possibility the decision could be delayed until the judicial inquiry on corruption presents its report around the middle of January.

India and Pakistan are meeting in a two-Test encounter, the first since 1989 when India toured Pakistan. The first Test is at New Delhi starting on January 28 and the second will be at either Madras or Kanpur starting on February 4.

The report to be delivered to Pakistan’s President will give recommendations on what action, if any, should be taken against players suspected of involvement in match-fixing.

“It is hoped the inquiry isover quickly so that the board is not put in an embarrassing situation of having to change captains,” Majid said.

The report will not be finished before January 16 when several of the accused players have been called to testify, said PCB legal adviser Ali Sibtain Fazli.

“January 16 is when we give an opportunity for the accused to question their accusers,” he said.

Fazli will also be travelling to Australia to take testimony on January 8 from Mark Waugh and Shane Warne.
