Pakistani batswoman Kiran Baluch yesterday shattered the world record for Test highest score by cracking a sparkling 242 in the first cricket Test against the touring West Indies at the National Stadium here.

Kiran’s score surpassed the previous best of 214 by India’s Mithali Raj who notched up her double ton against England in Taunton in 2001-02.

Pakistan made 426 for seven in 166 overs, eighth ever highest total in women’s cricket. In reply, the Windies were 72 for five at stumps on the second day.

Kiran, one of three Pakistani women to have played in England and a life member of the Marylebourne Cricket Club, said she was ecstatic at making the world record.

“I am delighted on creating world record and credit this record to all the women players in the world,” said Kiran. “It’s a great moment in women’s cricket in Pakistan and I am delighted that such records will give us the due recognition which has been missing.”

Kiran’s colleagues — Shaiza Khan and Sharmeen Khan — started women’s cricket in Pakistan a decade ago but has received backlash not only from the funadamentalists but also from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which does not recognise them.

The Pakistan Women’s Cricket Control Association (PWCCA) presided by Shaiza has the affiliation from the International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC) and featured in a World Cup in India in 1997 and also appeared in the World Cup 2005 qualifying rounds in Dublin, Ireland, last year.
