Leander Paes and his Australian partner Samantha Stosur earned a quarter-final berth in the Australian Open mixed doubles competition after a 6-3, 6-4 win over South African Chris Haggard and Elini Daniilidou of Greece here today.

The third-seeded Indo-Australian pair prevailed over their opponents in just under an hour to set up a clash with Canadian Daniel Nestor and Russia’s Elena Likhovtseva, who beat the Australian team of Stephen Huss and Monique Adamczak 6-1, 6-4 to seal a quarter-final place.

But Mahesh Bhupathi and Radek Stepanek bowed out of the men’s doubles competition at the quarter-final stage after a straight set loss against Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

The second seeded pair needed just over an hour to get the better of the Indo-Czech combination 6-3, 6-2. Bhupathi and Stepanek struggled on their serve winning just 65 per cent and 25 per cent of points on their first and second deliveries respectively. As a result, they were broken four times while they could only get the better of their opponents’ serve once.

Rupesh Roy and his Australian partner Stephen Donald moved into the boy’s semis beating top seeded team of Roman Jebavy of Czech Republic and Slovakian Martin Klizan in a tight three-setter. The eighth seeded Indo-Australian pair came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/5) in just over an hour-and-a-half.
