Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh today received yet another blow from the Election Commission when it ordered 100 per cent deployment of polling personnel from outside the state in Rewa district for the December 1 elections.
The EC sent a copy of the order to MP Chief Election Officer (CEO) today. ‘‘The decision was taken after the Commission received complaints about the bias the local officers were displaying,’’ sources said.
This is the third such order concerning Rewa. First, the district electoral officer was removed by the EC. Then, 21,815 names of ‘‘bogus voters’’ were deleted from the Mangawa rolls. Known as Speaker Srivinas Tiwari’s stronghold, the electoral activities of the Rewa district are being watched by the EC following complaints.
Tiwari’s reputation of wielding too much extra-constitutional influence over his constituency and the apprehension based on complaints that he is likely to use it to bend the laws.
‘‘The work at the polling stations is mostly supervised and conducted by local school teachers who could be under threat. That is why it was necessary to send the polling staff from outside to ensure free and fair polls,’’ EC sources said.
