Alleging that 500 farmers had ended their lives due to debt and drought in Bundelkhand, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Wednesday said “the ultimate solution” to people’s problems in the area lies in the creation of a new state.

Yadav, who joined a day-long dharna by members of the Bundelkhand Bachao Morcha at Jantar Mantar, lashed out at UP Chief Minister Mayawati and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for “compounding the problems of drought-hit farmers with their apathy”.

Taking a dig at Rahul for his forays into Bundelkhand, the JD(U) chief asked: “Why is he surveying? For the people in power, every bit of information comes right on the table. Why does he not do something for people given his leverage at the Centre. It is our job, as the opposition, to tour and see if the Government is doing its duty, while the Government’s duty is to deliver,” he added.

“Mayawati is not discharging her duties with a sense of responsibility. The Chief Minister is full of arrogance and is misusing her Dalit identity. She is touring the country projecting herself as future Prime Minister, while she has no time to discharge her obligations as CM of UP… If she has no time for the state, let her make way for someone else,” he said.
