
CHANDIGARH, Jan 17: As many as one lakh children were immunised during the second phase of Pulse Polio drive today.
A total of 265 booths and 50 mobile booths were put to use for immunising children up to the age of five years. Men and women thronged the booths and serpentine queues were seen at many places. A large number of people turned out at the booths in the labour colonies and jhuggis.
Dr Yash Pal Singla, District Family Welfare Officer and PPI8217;s nodal officer, UT Administration said that the Finance Secretary, Director Health Services, District Welfare Officer and area officers were being kept informed constantly during the drive.
Many Non-Government Organisations also contributed in the drive. Nearly 5,988 children were immunised at 16 centres manned by the Citizens Awareness Group in collaboration with the Health Department. In the three camps held by the Ranbaxy Community Health Care Society, Mohali 2,150 children were immunised.
Seventeen Rotarians from the United States of America also participated in the ongoing drive. According to Kanwal Bedi, the president of Rotary Club of Chandigarh, the Rotarians had planned the visit specifically to participate in the drive. Nearly 31,906 children at 80 booths were administered polio drops by the club, she said.
As many as 2,600 children were immunised at the seven centres set up by the defense personnel including those at Chandimandir, Kalka and Chandigarh. At the camps organised by Lions Club Rose 2,556 children were given the drops.
The Lions Club Midtown administered polio drops to 4,152 children at five different camps. Nearly 17,442 children were immunised against the dreaded diseases by the International Association of Lions Club. Mayor Kewal Krishan Adiwal also gave drops at Civil Dispensary, Sector 45.
