VADODARA, July 1: After witnessing a downward trend in 1997-98, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation8217;s octroi collection seems to be looking up, with the first quarter of this year recording an increase of Rs 3.13 crore vis-a-vis the corresponding period last year.

Attributing this to strict vigilance, Deputy Municipal Commissioner General I B Peerzada told Express Newsline on Wednesday that while the VMC had collected Rs 16.97 crore in April-May-June last year, this year, it had notched up Rs 20.10 crore this year. In June alone, a fine of Rs 8 lakh had been levied on octroi traders.

In 1997-98, the VMC had not even managed to set the targets set by the General Board.

Peerzada said joint patrolling by him, three assistant municipal commissioners and the octroi superintendents had paid off. He specified that there was no change in the recession in the market.

Meanwhile, highly placed sources said as part of its bid to improve the octroi department8217;s efficiency, the administration was planning to increase the number of hours of the jeeps used on contract.

A proposal to this effect would be soon forwarded to the Standing Committee, sources said, adding that six jeeps working in two shifts of six hours each would be required for two shifts of eight hours each.

According to information, new jeeps are likely to be purchased on these conditions. Sources further added that octroi staff was also likely to get uniforms.
