The CII has virtually opposed the government8217;s stand on job reservations in private sector.

Addressing the media, CII president Sunil Kant Munjal said: 8216;8216;Merit cannot be compromised. We cannot afford to compromise competitiveness in corporates. Rather than a patchwork approach, government should try to upgrade skills of the backward section of society.8217;8217;

8216;8216;It is part of the CMP and yet to be formulated as a policy. We believe that the government will consult industry before taking any decision. There are other ways of employment generation and the CII is planning to take a proactive role.8217;8217;

CII is already helping the weaker sections of the society by providing them requisite skills so that they have competitive edge in the job market.

On the forthcoming Budget, Munjal said: 8216;8216;By and large this Budget will be in the same direction like those prepared by previous government. We are, however, expecting emphasis on agriculture and rural economy, infrastructure, widening of the tax base and thrust on manufacturing industry.8217;8217;

He expressed confidence that 7-8 per cent GDP growth target is achievable in the next decade provided reform measures are on track which would lead to doubling of per capita income in the next 10 years.

Agriculture sector should grow at the rate of 3 per cent from the present level of 2.8 per cent while industry and services should grow at 9 per cent, Munjal said.
