BJP chief L K Advani referred to the Ram temple only in passing here today on the 13th anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. The BJP’s focus has instead shifted to corruption at the national level and the fight against Uttar Pradesh’s ‘‘jungle raj’’.
In Varanasi to press for a CBI probe into the killing of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, he visited the home of the slain legislator. He later took the Centre to task at a public meeting, where he dwelt at length on the Volcker report and the UPA Government’s failure to take proper action over the controversy surrounding Natwar Singh.
‘‘Kaisa nikamma Pradhan Mantri hai aur kaisa nikamma netritva hai (how worthless are the Prime Minister and the political leadership)’’ Advani said, while referring to the Volcker report row.
‘‘As many as 40 days have passed since the Volcker report has been made public but the UPA government has not taken any action so far,’’ the BJP president said. ‘‘This is not a common corruption. It is shameful to run politics through the money obtained from abroad in shady deals. No country can make progress with the kind of corruption exposed in Volcker report,’’ Advani added.
The Uttar Pradesh unit of the BJP, led by former chief minister Rajnath Singh, has been on an indefinite dharna outside the Circuit House here since November 30, pressuring Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav into a CBI probe on the November 29 murder of Rai.
Buoyed by the response it is getting here in its fight against the ‘‘mafia raj’’, the BJP has decided to launch a statewide agitation soon. ‘‘Our state leadership has called a meeting in Lucknow on Wednesday to decide the shape of the agitation to be launched all over the state. We have demanded a CBI probe into the killing of our party legislator but Mulayam is not listening to us. He will have to face the music now,’’ Rajnath said.
Varun Gandhi, who accompanied Advani, made a rousing speech. ‘‘The Mulayam Government is physically eliminating its opponents. You will have to wake up and reply to Mulayam in the language he and his party understand,’’ the son of Maneka Gandhi said to loud applause.
The BJP’s ongoing protests have prompted the district administration to indefinitely close all schools and colleges as well as the Banaras Hindu University.
