Adopting an aggressive stance, Director General of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) today claimed that there was no illegal immigration from his country, and instead, people from India were going to Bangladesh to work.
‘‘Why will people come from Bangladesh to India? Your (India’s) economic condition is not better than Bangladesh’s. There are 50,000 Indians in Bangladesh who have entered the country illegally,’’ said Major General Jahangir Alam Choudhury, DG, BDR. He is in India for talks with his BSF counterpart, Ajai Raj Sharma.
The BDR chief’s comments were along the same lines as those of Bangladesh Foreign Minister Morshed Khan, who earlier this month reportedly said India lied about the presence of ULFA leaders and insurgent camps in Bangladesh. Maj Gen Choudhury also denied the presence of any insurgent camp inside Bangladesh. ‘‘Last time BSF gave us a list of 195 camps and their locations. We searched all of them and did not find even a single camp,’’ he said.
Choudhury said that all bilateral issues were discussed with the BSF DG and the two sides had agreed on certain issues, including joint vigil.
