Bollywood has an affinity for remaking critically acclaimed regional films, but a few have made the same mark as Drishyam. The first Malayalam film, starring Mohanlal and directed by Jeethu Joseph, came out in 2013. It gave rise to a Hindi remake starring Ajay Devgn, and soon we had the sequels from both the Malayalam and Hindi camps. Now, as fans are gearing up for the third film of the franchise, in both languages, Joseph has shared an important update about the same.
The director recently talked about the timeline of the third Malayalam film and when the Hindi version will come out. During the JioHotstar South Unbound event, Jeethu was asked whether the Hindi film was coming out before the Malayalam version. He quickly shot down the rumours and said that the Mohanlal-led film is at its last stages and is gearing up for a release right at the start of next year’s second quarter.
According to a Times Now report, Joseph said, “The post-production is currently on. We should release the film in the next three to four months. The good thing is, we are coming before the Hindi version. We will release first, and they can only release after 2 months.” The business side is already taken care of, as Panorama Studios announced that they have acquired the rights to Drishyam 3 from Aashirvad Cinemas.
During a separate conversation with SCREEN, Joseph talked about the kind of expectations people have from a franchise like Drishyam. The director clarified that he isn’t just trying to supersede the prequel but to organically explore what could have happened in the lives of the characters throughout this time. “I’ve created only one franchise so far; that’s Drishyam. Nonetheless, it’s an organic approach that I have used there. That was the case with Part 2, and it will be the same with Drishyam 3 as well,” said Joseph.
He added, “Many people, after Part 3 was announced, commented that ‘Drishyam 2’s script was amazing, and we expect something better than that.’ I replied to such remarks in some interviews that I’m not consciously trying to write a ‘better-than-Drishyam 2’ script just for the sake of it. My focus is only on Georgekutty and his family and on what could have happened in their lives over the six or seven years since Part 2.”
The cast of Drishyam 3 is reported to include Mohanlal, Meena, Siddique, Asha Sharath, Esther Anil, and Ansiba Hassan.
