MUMBAI, JUNE 28: N M College bagged five ranks in the TYBCom examinations whose results were declared by the University of Mumbai on Tuesday. Sydenham College, Churchgate was second with four ranks while the regular topper Podar College, Matunga had to settle for three ranks this year.

Ashish Karandikar Vilas from Sydenham topped the TYBCom examination with 83.86 per cent. Sydenham find its name in the merit list after a gap of 13 years.

Ashish, who is proud to have got a rank for his college, intends to be a Chartered Accountant CA and has also done his Inter CA. 8220;It helps one get core competency in various subjects,8221; he says, adding that the rush for commerce was however due to the economy boom8217; after liberalisation.

The second rank was shared by Sridevi Amudhan from SIES College and Puja N Maheshwari from NM College and Anup Mehta also from NM, with 82.86 per cent. Shashibhushan Jogani from NM came third with 82.71 per cent.

The toppers were felicitated at the university8217;s Fort campus today.While a total of 47,483 candidates appeared for the BCom exam, the pass percentage was 47.91 per cent.

M K Desai, Principal, NM College, stated that his college did not give any special training to meritorous students but instead focussed on providing any kind of help to students the year around. 8220;Students were allowed to avail of college facilities till 12 pm,8221; he adds. Attributing the trend of more and more students opting for commerce to the fact that it is a tension-free8217; stream, Desai adds that students can also take up other courses like CA and Company Secretaryship at the same time. Also, comparatively, commerce is a cheaper option, Desai feels.
