PUNE, Oct 5: The plan for the first fly-over along the Mumbai-Pune highway at Lokmanya Tilak chowk in Nigdi is ready. Modalities for inviting bids for the proposed flyover will soon be initiated by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC.

In fact, PCMC city engineer S D Garade is confident that work will begin in December. The fly-over is expected to be completed within a year.

Shops and houses located on both sides of the highway have been a major hindrance for smooth movement of traffic for several years. It was early last year that road widening was completed in a major way at Nigdi. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation had proposed five fly-overs along the highway in Pimpri-Chinchwad limits, and it was agreed that the PCMC would implement the plan of the fly-over at Nigdi.

Speaking to this paper, Garade said that to prevent traffic congestion at Nigdi when the work of the fly-over actually starts, the road widening work was completed and only two small temples, one near the bus terminus and other at the bus stop, need to be shifted now.

The fly-over will have a total length of 520 metres. The centre bridge structure will have a length of 40 metres, with approaches of 180 metres towards Mumbai, and 300 metres towards Pune. The width of the fly-over will be 15.5 metres, having single lanes of seven meters each. There will be total 15 spans, spaced at a distance of 20 metres.

Two service lanes, each having width of 7.5 meters for traffic towards Yamunanagar and Nigdi-Pradhikaran have been specified in the plan.

There is no plan at present for imposing toll for the fly-over, Garade said.

Four other fly-overs have been proposed at Kasarwadi, Pimpri Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar chowk, Chinchwad and at Akurdi Khandoba Mal chowk. The PCMC general body meeting has already approved a resolution that the corporation will construct the fly-overs instead of allotting the work to the MSRDC. The plans for the fly-over are being finalised, and simultaneously road widening work is also being completed.
