NEW DELHI, JUNE 28: Even as political opinion remains divided on the issue of calling a session of the Rajya Sabha, the option of convening a non-controversial forum like the all-party National Integration Council has surprisingly been overlooked.
Not a single party has demanded that the Council be convened 8212; at a time when the Government needs to formulate a unified response on the ongoing hostilities and take the country 8212; and the entire political spectrum 8212; into confidence about the various aspects of the war.
The NIC last met in 1992, just ahead of the demolition of the Babri Masjid. No efforts were made to reconstitute it after the Narasimha Rao Government bowed out.
However, the Council can still be called, say sources in the Home Ministry.
Composed of representatives from all parties and eminent citizens from various fields, the NIC is a permanent group, and the 170-odd members appointed by Narasimha Rao technically continue to be on the body.
The idea of a national integration body wasconceived by Jawaharlal Nehru; the first meeting was held in 1962, the year of the Chinese aggression.
