Chandigarh, March 30: India needs to energetically increase its economic interaction with the United States and though it must resist pressure by the US where national interests are involved, the short-term goal must not be allowed to overtake the long-term one.
This was stated by Prof. V. P. Dutt, former Rajya Sabha member and pro Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University, while delivering the first Saini Foundation lecture on Pokharan II and its impact on India8217;s Foreign Policy8217;. Dutt stressed that India was yet to learn 8220;to play economic diplomacy8221;.
He stated that the problems encountered in international relations following the May 1998 blasts were partly of India8217;s own making. 8220;Especially the hoopla, the I8217;ll-take-on-the-whole-world attitude was like some child in the street flaunting new toys,8221; he remarked. Prof. Dutt added that security had always been interpreted in a very narrow sense. 8220;Not all weapons can secure a country without internal cohesion and economic stability,8221; he said.
The sinologist added that in the final analysis social solidarity and economic well being constituted national security.
