In a bid to create a platform for estranged Congress leaders, former external affairs minister Natwar Singh met veteran leader K Karunakaran, who recently joined the NCP, here today.
Singh, who has been suspended from the Congress, declined to comment on his plans and said his meeting with Karunakaran signalled the coming together of 8220;like-minded people8221; who shared Nehruvian ideals. 8220;It is an indication that we are going to work together,8221; he told reporters after the hour-long meeting at Karunakaran8217;s residence here.
Asked if the move was aimed against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Singh said, 8220;We don8217;t wish to discuss individuals.
8220;We have worked in the Congress party and also in the government. Karunakaran has vast experience. We are raising certain issues. Our coming together is on issues.8221;
Asked whether the Central government was under US pressure on the Iraq issue, Singh said he did not want to discuss specific issues but was of the view that deviating from Nehruvian ideals in foreign policy would be a cause for concern.
Karunakaran, who recently dissolved his DIC-K to join the NCP some 17 months after breaking ranks with the Congress, said efforts to bring together those who believe in ideals and the political approach of Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi would be carried foward.
To secure this, efforts will be made to bring together all those who shared these ideals across the country, he said.
