Army officials assaulted

Three army officers attending a course at the School of Artillery, Deolali, were assaulted by some civilians. One of the officers was injured in the scuffle. The Deolali police have arrested five persons.

According to a case registered at the Deolali police station, three lieutenants – Subodh Chamanlal Chaudhary, Vikram Kumar and Chandu Dadlani were assaulted near Variety Stores, Main Street in the Deolali Camp area at around 11.30 pm yesterday. The officers had returned from dinner and were in mufti. After the scuffle, the officers registered a complaint with the police and five persons were arrested. Ravindersingh Yadav, Sarojkumar Yadav, Betalsingh Yadav, Shamlal Yadav and Mangesh Arvind Mabade were locked up after the officers identified them early today. One of the officers, Lt Vikram Kumar, has been hospitalised.

Farmers’ stir:

The Shetkari Sanghatana will launch a series of agitations all over Maharashtra from August 9, to focus attention on the plight offarmers. Addressing a rally of sanghatana activists, state president Wamanrao Chatap, said a non-cooperation movement would be launched and farmers would declare themselves free from debt.

He said morchas and rallies would be held at the village and block levels and urged activists to blacken the faces of corrupt government officials and force them to sit on donkeys and take them around in processions.

Kids’ theatre:

Chairperson of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad, Bhakti Barve-Inamdar, has urged the government to pay greater attention to children’s theatre.

At the prize distribution ceremony of the 17th drama competition organised by the cultural affairs directorate of the state government last night, Inamdar stressed the need to encourage competition among child artistes. She said drama activities in schools require special attention to tap the hidden and unexplored talent in children.
