Ironic vigilanceWhen the villagers of Pathare village in Sinnar block decided to form a local panel to curb illicit liquor business, little did they think that they would have to disband it within two months.Whose garbage is it?The city-fathers of Nashik are currently divided on where the garbage dump of the city should ideally be located. Every corporator wants it to be located in somebody else's constituency. The present dump is located on 52 acres of land along the Mumbai-Agra National Highway near Adgaon naka and local residents and politicians are up in arms to demand its shifting. The Nashik Municipal Corporation has acquired about 100 acres of land near Pathardi, about 10 km from the city for shifting the present dump and installting an incinerator. However, the residents and corporators of the Pathardi region have opposed the shifting of the dump in their area. The Mayor's suggestion that garbage dump be decentralised and garbage be dumped in six different locations, hasstirred a hornet's nest. The fact remains that Nashik generates 300 tonnes of garbage daily and the city fathers, who talk of `Clean Nashik, Green Nashik' fail to realise that garbage will have to be dumped somewhere to clean the city. Perhaps, the reason could be that property prices are inversely proportional to the existence of a garbage dump and many of the corporators deal in real estate.
