After decades of neglect, Patiala’s Quila Mubarak sparkles again. Pakistani rock band Junoon’s lead guitarist and songwriter Salman Ahmed and actress Nandita Das are here to shoot Salman’s music video for his solo project Ghoom Tana. ‘‘The idea took birth during my visit to Patiala Heritage Festival. I fell in love with the place. I knew I would need a voice to fill this place. I asked Shubha Mudgal,’’ says Salman, pointing at the fort.
Shubha Mudgal agreed and so did Nandita Das (who features in it) and Naseeruddin Shah (for voice-over).
If Indian artistes have Salman impressed, so has Patiala, the town of his ancestors. ‘‘I found whatever my grandfather told me about about its streets, cricket and music of its people. I feel kissed by the city,’’ he says. Salman will be shooting for his video at Namdar Khan Road (the road named after his ancestor), Laxman Jhulla and a few other places.
About the video, he says: ‘‘I play a Pakistani who brings gifts for my friends in Patiala. Nandita is a young woman who has lost her husband. We meet and get to know each other. The video is about hope and harmony.’’ That probably explains why Salman has decided to release it on August 14/15 — the Independence days of Pakistan and India.
‘‘It’s my first visit to Patiala. I like it. I’m all set to shop for some Patiala salwars,’’ she says, adding, ‘‘the fact that it is a collaborative effort between Indians and Pakistanis made me join it. It is also my first music video.’’
Jittery about driving a scooter for the next scene, Nandita says: ‘‘I’m having a vision of falling down with nobody ready to help me.’’ But for now, she is planning a trip to Pakistan and looking at some scripts.
