PUNE, MAY 8: Chhatrapati Shivaji seems to be the eternal favourite when it comes to renaming roads, installing statues or naming schools. The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) has received a record 13 proposals from organisations who either have a desire to install a statue of the founder of the Maratha empire at the premises of the PCB or in the cantonment gardens.
The late Gen Arun Kumar Vaidya is another popular figure after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Pune cantonment. The PCB has been receiving requests from a number of organisations, political parties and individuals to name traffic islands, chowks and junctions besides erecting statues and unveiling portraits.
Interestingly, these proposals have been pending for sometime since the PCB has been unable to arrive at a decision.
The local Shiv Sena unit has placed a demand before the PCB to install a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji at the entrance of the board office at Golibar Maidan. The party has also demanded that the board room be named after the king and his photograph displayed and a road crossing and a school on Sachapir Street also be named after him.
There are other requests from citizens like displaying an oil painting of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the installation of a bust in the compound of the cantonment board office.
The Gen Arunkumar Vaidya Statue Action Committee has urged the cantonment board to install a statue of the former Army chief at the Mumbadevi chowk and also rename the chowk after him. The Matang Ekta Parishad has suggested that the Mukti-Dham crematorium on Shankarsheth Road near Golibar Maidan be named after Gen Arunkumar Vaidya. The PCB has also received a request from the Pune Cantonment Mahila Congress Committee to name the junction of the Rajendra Sinhji Road and Abhimanyu Marg after the martyr.
The Pune Cantonment Rahiwasi, Hathgadiwale Kashtakari Sanstha has urged the board to rename the road from Mahatma Gandhi bus stop to Good Luck Hotel as Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. The RPI Parvati Matdar Sanghhas made a request before the board to display the portrait of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in the porch of the board. The board has been pressed with requests from mandals in the cantonment to rename two very old chowks – Babajan chowk as Acharya Prahlad Keshav Atre Chowk and Jan Mohammed Street as Acharya Prahlad Keshav Atre Street.
