Talks between Russia and Iran failed to reach an agreement over Moscow’s offer to set up a joint venture on Russian soil to enrich uranium for Iran.

Both the countries agreed to continue negotiations, the press service of the Russian Security Council said after the first round of talks, in the Kremlin. ‘‘The talks with the Iranian delegation in the Kremlin have already been completed. An agreement was reached that further talks will be held,’’ the press service of the Russian Security Council said .

‘‘Negotiations with the Iranian delegation in Moscow are still in progress. It is premature to speak of their results,’’ Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a briefing, referring to the outcome of talks.

Earlier, at a Cabinet meeting, Lavrov informed President Vladimir Putin that ‘‘we will try to defuse the crisis around Iranian nuclear programme ahead of the session of International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors scheduled to take place in early March.’’

Iran to continue N-research: Meanwhile, a Reuters report from Brussels said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki insisted his country would press ahead with nuclear research even if it accepted the Russian proposal.

But a source close to the negotiations, requesting anonymity, told the agency that the talks would continue on Tuesday. ‘‘The talks are over for today. They will resume tomorrow,’’ the source said.
