
Car loans racket busted
The Unit I of the Crime Branch today busted a major racket involving the use of forged documents with which motor cars of different makes were purchased after loans were obtained from financial companies with the help of the documents. One person has been arrested in this connection.
Police said that Shankar Pulikelal along with 14 others had cheated financial companies of Rs 45 lakh. According to the complaint filed by one Farookh Shaikh, a consultant to financial institutions like Standard Chartered Bank, Escord Finance Limited, Cholamandalam Finance, the accused had forged documents like Income Tax returns and other documents and submitted the same to the above companies for loan.
After obtaining the loan, the accused used to buy cars and then sell them thus cheating the different companies from whom they obtained the loans.
Shankar had obtained a Rs 3.45 lakh loan from Cholamandalam Finance and purchased a Maruti Esteem car which he sold later. His associates haveyet to be arrested. He was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer and has been remanded to police custody till December 28.
10-year RI for two in rape case
Two persons were sentenced to ten years8217; rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 each by Additional Sessions Judge R P Sondur-Baldota on Friday for allegedly raping a pregnant lady in 1996. Special Public Prosecutor G A Panna told the court that on June 17, 1996, Pravin Ghag and Naresh Prajapati had raped the pregnant wife of a tailor at Teen Dongri hutments, Goregaon.
The victim who already has three children was expecting her fourth child when the incident took place.
Man with 70 mobiles held at Sahar
The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs on Friday arrested a person who was allegedly trying to smuggle 70 mobile, 20 cordless phones and assorted motorcycle parts valued at Rs 10 lakh in the international market. Customs officials said that Mohammed Shakeel Ur Rehman was intercepted at the Sahar airporton his arrival from Singapore. Rehman disclosed that he had purchased the above items in order to sell the same in the city. He has been remanded to judicial custody till December 23 by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Usha Iyer.
First D Litt degree in Sindhi awarded
Dr Dayal K Dhameja Asha8217; became the first Sindhi in the world to be awarded with Degree of D Litt. in Sindi by University of Mumbai. University Vice Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh awarded the degree at a function held on December 16 and also presented Khameja with a Saraswati medal on behalf of the University.
