MUMBAI, November 24: The Coast Guard today flew a special sortie to spot a dead whale suspected to be drifting in an oil slick near the North Field of Bombay High, some 95 nautical miles off Mumbai city. The Coast Guard swung into action after receiving information from a helicopter pilot that he had seen a baby whale circling its dead mother in an oil slick between NQO and NO platforms in the Bombay High oilfields. Officials said the sortie was carried out to locate the carcass before any further action could be initiated.
Drive for funds
Marcus Wright and Johnny Kendall, representatives in India for Chesterton Meghraj and De La Rue, will raise funds for buying a Tata Sumo for easier transportation of 400 disadvantaged children of the Voluntary Organisation in Community Enterprise (VOICE). The duo, along with Richard Allsopp, will cycle from Mumbai to Goa, a distance of 600 kilometres, to raise Rs five lakh for the vehicle, a press note from Concern India Foundation read.
Campaign
The All India Institute for Health Education in Leprosy has launched a week long campaign for education, survey and detection of leprosy patients covering a population of more than 30,000 people residing in 60 villages in the Kulgaon-Badlapur council area. Sixty NSS students will participate in the campaign, which will conclude on November 30.
