Another rail roko?

The Diploma Engineers Association of Railways DEAR, representing about 1,03,000 subordinate engineers has decided to launch a mass dharna on August 22 at all Divisional Rail Managers offices in the country to protest against the recent pay commission. A rail roko is also on the cards, stated their official press release.

Help for women

With an aim to empower and check atrocities on women, the Bangalore-based Guild of Women8217;s Achievers GOWA has started its Mumbai chapter.Announcing this at a press-meet, organisers informed that GOWA, formed in March 1996, has been handling women8217;s issues with an aim to offer support services for women in trouble.

Atrocities at home and the workplace are two major stress- related spheres which are handled by Guild members. Women will be given access to counselling and helped to organise their lives in a practical manner, they informed.

The project in Mumbai will begin with helping women get better facilities at her work-place and eradicating gender based exploitation. Organisations will be asked to create conducive work environs for its women employees.

MTNL bills

The due date for payment of telephone bills dated August 1, 1997, has been extended from August 22 to August 26 without any surcharge. An MTNL, Mumbai, spokesperson said that this is being done on account of a bank holiday which falls on the 22nd of this month.

Award for JNPT

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust JNPT has been selected for the Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra IPVM Award 1995. The Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment amp; Forests, Government of India, Vinod Vaish, has congratulated JNPT for this achievement.

Every year, twelve IPVM awards are given to individuals and organisations. JNPT has been chosen from the public sector category for exceptional contribution to the field of afforestation and wasteland development. Out of 2,500 hectares of land area in JNPT, 800 hectares are exclusively reserved for greenery.

Debate

The Mumbai Debating Society will hold a debate on Liberalisation will lead to liberation8217; at the Convocation Hall of the Mumbai University, Fort, on August 21, 5.30 pm. The debate will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor Dr Snehalata Deshmukh and the participating speakers are Dr Mohanbhai Patel, Dr M R Kurup, Prof J V Dabli and Nimesh Pandya.

Aptech courses

Aptech Computer Education, a division of the global Information Technology giant, Aptech Limited, recently announced the launch of its computer education courses in Indian languages. Speaking to the press at the inaugural function, Aptech8217;s Managing Director, Ganesh Natarajan said: 8220;Over 90 per cent of our Indian population does not read or speak English. Aptech8217;s courses in Indian languages are therefore the apt gift to the masses on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of India8217;sIndependence.8221;He added that by this localisation, Aptech will once and for all shatter the misconception that computer education is only for the English speaking.

Seminar

A series of meaningful programmes in order to inculcate a sense of Caring Citizenship8217; and Values in Life8217; will be conducted by the National Society for Clean Cities 8211; India. The first in the series is a seminar on Caring Citizenship, which will be inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra Dr P C Alexander on August 30 at 10 am at Patkar Hall, SNDT University.
