Thane police alerted on AP prisoners
MUMBAI, April 19: The Thane police have been alerted by the Nizamabad District Police in Andhra Pradesh about a group of prisoners which had escaped from the district jail last month. About 72 prisoners had escaped after attacking the prison guards. While 25 of them were nabbed on the same day, two of them were arrested by the Thane district police in Virar last week. In a communication to Maharashtra Director General of Police, the Nizamabad DSP has said the prisoners, who are likely to be hiding in different parts of Maharashtra, might resort to dacoity and extortion. The accused carry cash rewards ranging from Rs 10,000 to 20,000 on their heads, and are in the age group of 25 to 30 years.
Gawli men held for Sainik’s murder
The Bhoiwada police today arrested two members of the Arun Gawli gang in connection with the murder of former Shiv Sena shakhapramukh Subhash Pundalik Dhumre in February this year.
According to police sources, the two gangstershave been identified as Shashi Mahadev Owhal alias Shashikant and Deepak Namdeo Shinde alias Shindi Balaji. They were nabbed from a hideout at Bhoiwada.
On February 18, a visitor had asked Dhumre to come out of his house, saying he wanted to speak to him in private. When the two went near Sai Baba Mandir on the Vitthal Chavan Road at Parel and started speaking, three other persons joined in and assaulted Dhumre with choppers and knives. The four inflicted multiple injuries on his chest, abdomen and arms before escaping in a waiting car.
Carnival for a cleaner Mumbai
Loads of fun and learning is in store for children at a colourful “Children’s Carnival for a cleaner Mumbai”, to be held on April 23 and 24 at Kala Ghoda.
Envisaged as a prelude to an awareness campaign to be initiated when school reopens, this first-time presentation under the aegis of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is expected to draw great crowds. Nearly 15,000 children, accompanied by their parents and families, areexpected to attend the carnival.
Said civic officials, “The focus is to garner support for the cleanliness drive through children, who are very instrumental in the shaping of opinion in the family. They are the best carriers of messages,” an official said.
Activities lined up include workshops that will teach clay-modelling, painting, craft and caricature drawings. Entertainment will be provided in the form of magic and puppet shows, competitions, cartoons, movie shows and music concerts.
Devendra given literary award
Noted short story writer Devendra was presented the `Indu Sharma Katha Samman at a function held recently.
The award, comprising Rs 11,000 and a memento, was presented by Manohar Shyam Joshi, well known TV personality. The award is instituted in memory of late Indu Sharma, well known short story writer, who died of cancer four years ago.
Kala Niketan awards
The Maharashtra Kala Niketan will hold its annual awards night at Rangsharda, Bandra Reclamation, on the eveof Maharashtra Day on April 29 at 7 pm. State Minister of Cultural Affairs, Pramod Navalkar, will be the chief guest. The `Maharashtra Ratna’ and `Maharashtra Vaibhav’ awards will be presented to film stars, social workers, journalists, sportsmen and other distinguished personalities.
