RI for three Gawli aides
Three members of the Arun Gawli gang were sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday by designated TADA Judge P K Chaware for possession of arms and ammunition which were used to threaten a diamond trader in 1993. The convicts include Kishore Sawant, Dinesh Sawant and Hemant Inamdar.
Kishore has also been sentenced to a year8217;s rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act for possession of bullets. The main accused in the case, Subhash Gawde, died some years ago.
Inter-state car racket busted
The Bandra police has busted an inter-state car theft racket where cars stolen in Mumbai were resold with fake papers in Kerala. Seven cars were recovered and three persons arrested.Pullikodan Suleiman 37 and Kolorothodi Mohammed 35 were arrested while driving a stolen car during a nakabandi last month.
A police party then visited Calicut, where they arrested one more suspect, Karim Abdullah 27, and recovered one Cielo, two Tata Estates, two Maruti800s and two Tata Sumos. Officers investigating the case under the supervision of DCP Datta Padsalgikar include Inspectors M Bhoddhake, Sanjeev Gawade and Gosalkar.Bombay Hospital surgeon dies
DR Pramod Kumar Jhawer, FRCS, senior surgeon and honorary professor, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, passed away on March 30 in Los Angeles, USA.
Dr Jhawer was honorary secretary of the Indian and Asian Association of Colo-Rectal Surgeons. He was renowned for his work in gastro-entrital, parathyroid, rectal and colon surgery. Dr Jhawer was also associated with organisations like Bombay Medical Aid Foundation and Maheshwari Pragati Mandal. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. A condolence meeting will be held on April 6 at S P Jain auditorium, 4th Floor, Bombay Hospital, at 12 pm.
BMC transport employees8217; stir
Over 5,000 employees working in the Transport Department of the BMC staged a dharna at the civ ic headquarters on Tuesday. The employees, affiliated tothe Municipal Mazdoor Union, are demanding payment of arrears of unclean work allowance from 1991, overtime allowance from July, 1985, and filling up of vacant posts. A delegation later met Additional Municipal Commissioner Shridhar Joshi and submitted a memorandum.
