New Rent Act meeting

The Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan has organised a meeting on March 14, 1998, to discuss the implications of the new Rent Act. The meeting will be presided over by former Housing minister Dr V Subramanian and attended by Housing minister Raj Purohit, Chief Justice of the Mumbai High Court Justice V S Deshpande, Justice H Suresh, Ramrao Adik and former Mumbai sheriff I M Kadri, and others.

CR Exp trains

Six express trains of Central Railway will be terminated at Dadar station instead of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus for a period of 30 days from March 15 to April 13, 1998, due to ongoing construction at CST.

The affected trains are: 1082 Up Kanyakumari-Mumbai Express daily, 1012 Up Kolhapur-Mumbai Mahalaxmi Express daily, 1354 Up Bhusawal-Mumbai Passenger daily, 6332 Up Trivandrum-Mumbai Express Saturdays, 6340 Up Nagarcoil-Mumbai Express Tuesdays,Thursdays and Sundays, and 7494 Up Tirupati-Mumbai Express Mondays and Fridays. However, all trains will depart from CST in the down direction.

Camp on allergy

The Academy of Asthma Allergy, Pune, and the Mahatma Gandhi Mission8217;s Navi Mumbai Hospital will organise an Asthma Allergy Camp on March 21 at the MGM hospital Vashi. Those interested can register their names at the hospital during working hours. Patients attending the camp will get medicines for one month, pulmonary function testing, allergy testing and hypnosensitisation medicines at concessional rates.

Infofax, a new interactive voice response service has been launched by the Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited VSNL to enable easy access to information on the company and its services to people.

Ex-ACPdead

Retired ACP Dwarkanath Sabaji Dabholkar passed away on March 7 after prolonged illness. He was 78. Dabholkar had been awarded the President8217;s Medal for his achievements. He had also compiled a collection of 108 religious poems, which were released a few years ago.

Award for writer

Multi-lingual letter writer and social activist Shyamlal Damanai was honoured with the Samaj Gurav award by the Man Mohan Ras Mandal at its 41st anniversary function at Rang Bhavan on March 8.

Book released

The Ageing Brain, a detailed book on medico-legal problems of the aged, has been released. The book is sponsored by Larsen and Toubro and covers medical and legal aspects of medical competence, the concept of the last will and testament, medical and legal aspects of the informed consent on what should be done with one8217;s body, power of attorney, living will and proxy decision making, and research on the demented.

Senior PI dead

Senior Police Inspector in charge of Kurla railway policestation, Mandarsinh Shivaji Rathod, passed away at the Hurkisondas hospital on Tuesday after a massive heart attack. He was 48. His death has been condoled by Special IG GRP Sudhakar G Suradkar.

HC restrains Sahara on Lonavala project

The Bombay High Court has restrained Sahara India Housing Ltd from carrying out any activity concerning development of its proposed hill station near Lonavala until clearance was obtained from the Collector within four weeks.

The directions were given on March 9 by Justice V P Tipnis and Justice N Arumugham who heard a petition filed by SIHL challenging the orders of forest authorities imposing ban on non-forest activities on the land acquired for the proposed hill station. While the petitioner contended that the land being developed into a hill station was not forest land, the Forest Department of the state government submitted the land was first acquired under Maharashtra Private Forests Acquisition Act, 1973 and thereafter restored to the original owners.The department argued that even after restoration, it continued to be forest land and was subject to restoration under Forest Conservation Act, 1980.

Deora protests amendments to Sales Tax act

Newly elected Member of Parliament from south Mumbai, Murli Deora, has written a letter to chief minister Manohar Joshi expressing displeasure over amendments to the Bombay Sales Tax Act.

Deora8217;s letter reads: 8220;The business and trading community in Maharashtra is highly distressed with the amendments. The amendment demanding submission of a fourth copy of the challan personally by a trader to the sales tax officer every month has met with severe resistance and criticism. quot;This amendment implies not only harassment of traders, but also offers wide scope for corrupt elements to exploit the provision. The second amendment relates to the upward revision of the appeal fee from Re 1 to Rs 1,000. Such amendments create hurdles in the growth of business, trading and industry.8221;

State CID probe into Sena man8217;smurder

The investigations of the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kedar Redegar 52 has been taken over by the state crime investigation department CID on Wednesday. Joint commissioner of police crime Ranjit Singh Sharma said that the police are suspecting the hand of underworld don Arun Gawli in this murder. While at the same time, it is investigating other angles to the case. Sharma said he expects to make a breakthrough in the case very soon.
