Bright Sparks8217; science fair
The British Council has organised Bright Sparks8217;, a festival of British science between February 16 and 24 at various venues in the city. Seven Britain scientists, including Susan Greenfield, author of Journey to the Centres of the Mind, and Colin Blakemore, president-elect of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, will give lectures during this period. Part of the fair is an exhibition Night Skies 8211; The Art of Deep Space8217;, photographs by David Malin as well as a science and environmental film followed by a talk by Ivan Hattingh, Director of Development, WWF, UK. A painting competition and Astro Quiz contest will also be held at the Nehru Planetarium. Contact the British Council on 2823530/60.

Mumbai regional Congress Committee president Murli Deora announced today that all MRCC cells have been dissolved. New cells are to be set up.

Kanchi seer8217;s statue to be installed
The statue of the lateSankaracharya of Kanchi, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathy, will be installed at the South Indian Education Society SIES Management College complex at Nerul, Navi Mumbai, on Friday, February 19.

Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathy, popularly known as the Maha Periyaval, was the 68th Sankaracharya of the Kanch Kamakoti Peetam. He passed away on January 8, 1994 at the age of 100. The Nerul Academic Complex of the SIES College has been named after the Mahaswami.

The statue, which is about 6 feet in height in meditation posture, was made out of a single black granite stone by sculptors from Kancheepuram and Orissa. It took a year to complete, and is the only statue of the Paramacharya in Maharashtra and the second in the country. The first one is located in Kanchi.

The SIES has also organised a Maha Rudra Mahayagnam at the site between February 17 and 19. The society has already announced plans to set up a Veda Patashala and a home for the aged at Nerul with preference for retired teachers fromMumbai.

Vanjari classes for NDA exams
The Capt Vanjari Academy will hold classes to guide applicants to Armed Forces Colleges. The classes will be held from March 24 for 12th Std students and April 1 for 10th std students. The classes will coach students aiming to apply to the NDA, Armed Forces Medical College, Naval Engg College, College of Military Engg, Military Nursing Service.
