
Exhibition on banking at SIES
A commerce exhibition on banking, insurance and housing finance co-sponsored by The Indian Express and the Bank of Baroda will be held at the SIES High School Matunga from 8 to 10 January. Industry majors like RBI, UTI, SBI, LIC, Bank of Baroda, Corporation Bank, Citibank, NABARD, GIC Housing, LIC Housing, All India Bank Depositor8217;s Association, Loss Prevention Society, ICICI Bank, New India Assurance and a few co-operative banks will be participating. Deepak Satwalekar, MD, HDFC Ltd will inaugurate the exhibition on January 8.
Govt takes over gymkhana land
The state government last week took over the famous Princes Victoria Merry Gymkhana at Churchgate on the expiry of land lease. This is the first time in Mumbai that the government has taken over any such institution.
The action was carried out on the orders of Collector of Mumbai, Dr Sanjay Chahande. In a press release, the collector said the land was leased out to the gymkhana in 1939 for 60 years. Thelease expired on December 31, 1998, and the gymkhana property and the land have now become government property, Chahande said. He added that in all other cases where the lease comes to an end, the government will take over the property.
Essay contest on reservations
The Forum For Fairness In Education FFFIE has organised an essay competition on Ending caste based reservations gradually, smoothly and without a pinch8217; for students from Mumbai and Thane district junior colleges and all colleges of SNDT and Mumbai university. All entries should reach the forum office on or before January 31. The essays should be in English. Rules and regulations and entry forms of the competition can be obtained from the Forum office on payment of Rs 10 in cash, pay order, DD or postal order between 9.30 am and 1 pm and 4 pm and 7 pm from Monday to Friday.
Children of judges, trustees of the sponsors Kirandevi Saraf Trust 8211; and management committee members of the forum are not allowed to participate in thecompetition.
