
Distribution of saplings
Over 30,000 saplings will be distributed by the I Love Mumbai8217; Committee on July 5 at 17 different places to promote greenery during the rains. This year8217;s campaign is being sponsored by Shell India Private Limited, and the chief guest will be governor Dr P C Alexander.
Industrialist Narsee dead
Industrialist Chhatrapuj Narsee expired after a prolonged illness today at the age of 73. He had been indisposed since the last two years.
An educationist as well, Narsee was the founder of the Shree Vile Parle Kelawani Mandal, which runs Mithibai and N M Colleges, among other educational institutions. He was also the former chairperson of Golden Tobacco Limited and fought for the indigenous cigarette production movement with multi-nationals.
Muslim personal law seminar
The Institute of Islamic Studies and Centre for Study of Society and Secularism have organised a two-day seminar on July 3 and 4 between 10 am and 5 pm on Muslim Personal Law and Women8217; at J PNaik Bhavan Hall, Kalina Campus, University of Mumbai, Santacruz east. The seminar will be inaugurated by chairperson of the National Commission for Women NCW, Mohini Giri, and noted Islamic scholar Dr Rafique Zakaria will preside.
The inaugural speech will be delivered by NCW member Syeda Saiyidain and noted Islamic scholar and director of the Institute of Islamic Studies, Dr Asghar Ali Engineer, respectively.
Sant Tukaram8217;s abhangs
n ON the occasion of Ashad Ekadashi, the 350th year of the mahanirwan of Sant Tukaram, a collection of his abhangas, or devotional songs, titled Amar Tuka Zala, will be presented by Chandrashekhar Vaze to tunes set by his father Pandit Raghunath Vaze on July 4 between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm at Chhabildas High School Hall, off Ranade Road, Dadar west.
Iodised salt not necessary8217;
The Maharashtra state branch of the Indian Medical Association IMA at an executive committee meeting recently arrived at the unanimous opinionthat the compulsory use of salt with iodine is not necessary for the public in the state and the country.
Goitre is prevalent only in the epidemic areas where a supplement of iodine is needed, and the consumption of extra iodine may create complications. Hence the government should not make its use compulsory and lift the ban on common salt in Maharashtra, said a press-note.
