Vasai tides over water crisis

The monsoon has cast a damper on the Shramjeevi Sanghatana8217;s plans to enforce a blockade against water tankers in Vasai taluka, which was hit by an unusually acute water shortage on June 17. With the seasonal deluge commencing on Saturday, tanker operators have been drawing water from the numerous wells and ponds sprinkled all over the taluka, in areas like Raipada and Chandansher.

The situation turned grim when the sanghatana enforced8217; a spontaneous blockade against tankers drawing water from Usgaon dam, the main source of water supply. The crisis was sparked by an accident, when a tanker crashed into a bullock cart, killing the farmer and one of his bullocks on the main road from Usgaon. On Saturday, the police offered the Vasai Tanker Owners8217; Association protection and an SRP escort from Mandvi police station up to Usgaon dam. However, tanker owners declined the offer, saying the river in Usgaon was in spate and their pumps would be useless amid the strongcurrents. A VTOA spokesperson says the rains have considerably eased the situation and the water in the wells and ponds will suffice till the year-end.

Plastic surgeon appointed

Eminent plastic surgeon Dr Narendra Pandya was appointed as the honorary plastic surgeon to the Governor of Gujarat Anshuman Singh recently. Dr Pandya has been the honorary plastic surgeon to the late President Giani Zail Singh, former President R. Venkataraman, to the Governor of Maharashtra, said a press release.
